Winter Weather Increases Risk on Dangerous NJ Roads

As North Jersey residents look forward to the holiday season, it’s important to remember that many of the things we love about this time of year can also increase the danger on area roads. Winter driving conditions challenge even the most experienced motorists. Slick roads reduce traction, making it harder to stop or control a vehicle. Combine wintry weather with increased holiday traffic, and it’s possible that what should be a joyful time of year will be marred by a serious car crash.
Nationwide, more than 500,000 Americans annually are involved in vehicle accidents caused, in whole or in part, by winter weather. Even in years when there is not a great amount of snow, numerous injuries and deaths occur as a result of freezing temperatures. Black ice, often invisible to drivers, can turn even a short drive into a dangerous journey. While municipalities and other government bodies attempt to make roads safer by spreading salt and snowplowing, it often takes a long time to reach certain areas. Furthermore, a street or highway that’s cleared could quickly become hazardous again.
Route 80, which runs through Morris and Sussex counties, has been identified as a particularly dangerous stretch of highway during the winter months. Its high traffic volume, coupled with icy conditions, has made it the site of many fatal accidents during holiday time. Steep grades, sharp curves and heavy truck traffic amplify the risks, especially during snowstorms or freezing rain. Motorists used to traveling at high speeds on major highways often don’t make the necessary adjustments in poor weather.
The winter season also brings an increase in holiday travel, with more drivers on the road heading to gatherings, shopping centers and seasonal events. The combination of distracted drivers, inclement weather, and increased traffic congestion can lead to accidents, especially on roads lined with numerous restaurants and retail establishments, such as Route 10. Additionally, holiday celebrations often involve alcohol, raising the risk of impaired driving incidents.
Even the safest drivers can fall victim to accidents caused by others’ negligence in hazardous winter conditions. If you or a family member has been injured in a car accident, an experienced attorney can help you pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost income and other damages.
