Vehicle in Crash that Killed Morris County College Student Was Traveling 90 MPH

90 mph accident

Speeding on New Jersey roads is so common that most state residents barely notice it, unless a driver is traveling well over the posted limit or a crash caused by speeding directly affects us. Tragically, a family in Mount Olive is now dealing with the aftermath of a fatal accident that occurred when the vehicle driven by a pre-med student was hit by a car traveling at about 90 miles per hour.

The collision that killed 19-year-old Jacob Davis occurred in Roxbury on May 31. Davis was driving south on Howard Boulevard at about 10:30 p.m., when his car was struck by a speeding pickup traveling in the opposite direction. Upon reporting to the scene, police officers found several open alcohol containers in the truck, and subsequently arrested its driver, Belleville resident Gerald Veneziano. Subsequently, prosecutors charged Veneziano with reckless vehicular homicide and other criminal counts.

Speeding is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents and fatalities. One reason is excessive speed significantly reduces a motorist’s ability to react to unexpected situations. Even if the driver is able to react promptly, they might not have enough distance to stop the vehicle, leaving them unable to avoid a collision despite slamming on the brakes. Moreover, the force of impact in a crash increases when cars are moving faster, leading to more severe injuries and a higher likelihood of fatalities.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 30 percent of fatal car accidents nationwide are attributed, at least in part, to speeding. Most of these cases do not involve extreme violations like the one that occurred in the Roxbury crash, but even a relatively minor violation can be the difference between a serious injury and a near miss.

Victims of speed-related accidents, as well as their families, often suffer immense physical, emotional and financial harm. Holding responsible parties accountable is a necessary step toward justice and can serve as a deterrent to others. However, in many cases, liability is not clear-cut, so it is vital to retain experienced attorney who has the skill and resources to prove who is at fault
